Brief summary, reflection, and lessons learned from "The Duel between the Elephant and the Sparrow"

THE DUEL BETWEEN THE ELEPHANT AND THE SPARROW

BRIEF SUMMARY

In a jungle, there lived a family of sparrows in a branch of a Tamal tree. Their nest contains the eggs of the Sparrow. Unfortunately, here comes an elephant who was distressed by fever and heat, came to seek shelter beneath the tree. Blinded by his sickness, the elephant accidentally pulled the branch that caused the eggs to crushed. The hen sparrow lamented due to the death of her eggs.

The hen sparrow went to her friends namely the woodpecker, gnat, and the frog. She wanted to take revenge on the elephant with the help of her friends. With their plan and teamwork, the elephant fell into a huge pit and died.

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

Personally, I think this story was too hanging and shallow for it mainly focuses on taking revenge on the huge sick elephant. However, if the elephant intentionally killed the chicks of the hen sparrow, he deserved to be punished too. But, if the elephant was unaware that there was a sparrow’s nest on that branch, he deserves forgiveness.

In life, there are confusing events that we tend to question and people make decisions because of their raging emotions. One thing we should consider is the situation that happened, was it intentional or not? Because if we will make decisions right away, it will ruin our dignity. In the story, I believe that the hen sparrow did that because she was having a hard time in moving forward because she lost her babies. She was not able to confront the elephant and just kills the elephant poorly.  Therefore, the author of the story leaves the reader many questions like to what extent did the poor elephant deserve such death? Did the elephant intentionally crush the eggs? Nevertheless, the story shows how justice is served to the one who sought it.

Here are the moral lessons we can learn from the story:

  • The teamwork of small creatures can crush a giant problem. No matter how big the problem is, but if a group will work in unity, for sure there will be the strength that pushes their abilities to the limit.
  • Vengeance is best served when cold.
  • Say sorry if you accidentally hurt someone.
  • Great parents seek justice for their children.
