Here, I have realized that Africa is indeed a simple nation that is full of wonderful cultures that experienced harsh interference of civilization. I remembered the Philippines again, our own country that also suffered from the effects of civilization. It seems like what Africa and the Philippines are experiencing are of the same treatment, both conquered by powerful nations. I feel sad about this because these colonizers have taken so much of a country’s freedom and opportunity to grow on their own. Here are the things I have learned from this poem:

• It took so much rebellion and action to fight for rights.

• The scars of the oppressed nation will forever remain.

REFLECTIONS AND LESSONS LEARNED

This poem talks about the writer’s homeland which is Africa. Here he expresses his love and hope for the freedom of Africa. And if we relate it to our own colonial history, we can tell that we have been oppressed for so many years and were influenced by the foreign culture. Even though it has some positive effects on some aspects of our country, the negative effects are still dominant. Personally, I was able to realize that that person who has real compassion in loving their country will always show love in different forms such as writing, composing a song, or making a film. And making a literary piece is one of the powerful tools that a person can use to express whatever they’d love to express. Because of this poem, I was able to reflect on my own country’s experience during the colonization and I have learned the following:

          In life, we tend to consider other people’s judgment because we don’t want to hear negative comments from them. We are so fond of fitting into other people’s standards where in fact it should not be a big deal and we should mind our own businesses. Like from experience, I underwent a phase wherein I need social approval before doing something because I am afraid that I might get bashed. But later on, I realized that everything I did was wrong. It was wrong because I did not follow what I truly wanted. Just like in the story, the old man and his son ended up having a broken bike since they were triggered to ride the rusty bike even if it was not in a good condition. Moreover, I have observed that people will judge us no matter what we do, especially if their mindset is solely focusing on what they saw rather than the real context or score. We aren’t going to be perfect in a man’s eyes.

Overall, the things I have learned from this story are:

• Do not be quick in judging others.
• You will never be happy if you always try to impress others.
• Focus on what you have.
• Pleasing others will make you a failure

    The mythology of the Betel and Areca Tree explains why newlywed couples, as well as at ceremonies and anniversaries, chew the betel nut. There was a mandarin named Cao during the reign of Hung Vuong III. He has two handsome sons who looked so much alike that many people mistook them for twins. Tan and Lang, the two boys, were really close. Years later, King Hung Vuong III happened to be in that location, and the rock, tree, and plant, all of which he had never seen before, perplexed him. They mixed up the three and were now renowned to be a symbol of conjugal and fraternal love. To sustain conjugal love, brothers and sisters, especially newlyweds, began chewing betel. The tradition swiftly spread, and many people now chew betel at all gatherings to "keep mutual fondness."

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    This story will surely touch the heart of whoever reads it. Personally, I was moved by the story since I also have a sister who is very close to me like we’re twins. In the story, the love of the two brothers to each other prevails at the end wherein even until their last breath. I have realized that in this world, nothing compares to the love of the family because we will always run back to them if things get rough. Moreover, the story highlights a married life setting wherein the brother has to redirect his priorities in life since he already has a wife. This one is very relevant because if we will relate it to the real setting of married life, we usually see our brothers and sisters leaving our houses and giving a full focus on the family they are building. I myself can’t barely imagine if the time will come that my closest sister will plan to build her own family. I will feel happy for her but at the same time, I’d be in pain because for my entire life, she is my very best friend and I am used to having her as my lifesaver as always. On the other hand, the story can also relate to the Filipino culture wherein the oldest sibling will take care of the huge responsibilities in the family. However, this might be very emotional to me already, I have learned these things:

• Married life will surely change one’s priorities.
• The love of the family is the purest love we can have.
• Conjugal and fraternal love stays and remains forever.

MY THAI CAT

BRIEF SUMMARY

Sii Ward is the protagonist of this narrative. Sii Ward is a Thai or Siamese cat with blue eyes and intriguing fur. Sii Sward was a hero during the 1925 drought, earning the title of Rain Queen. It rained for three days and nights, and it appeared as if the rain would never cease until the sky was clear of water. Their crops have been protected, but Sii Sward is unconcerned about the rain. She slept soundly for the entire three days. Following that, farmers and their families came to see her. They stroked her soft fur and left her dry fish and pork, her favorite foods. Sii Sward was hailed as a hero that year.

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    This narrative is about people's faith in their god. They employ their Nang Maaw rite to appease the queen of rain in exchange for water from the sky. Sii Ward is their heroine of choice. As a lesson, faith and prayer are the most crucial things to do whether you are down or even when you are not. Just like what I mostly do every time. I always prayed to God and call His name not because I am asking for something, but for the thanksgiving and praises, I offer to Him. And when we are in our deepest and darkest moments, we all cling to Him because we believed that He will provide. Everything we ask will always come on time. If it is His will to give us such, we will always have it, but sometimes, let us not expect that He will grant our desires right away. Our prayers may be on hold or He will redirect our desires. In relation to the story, the people keep on praying to have what they desire until they were given. They sacrifice and offer prayers and efforts for them to be heard. Overall, I have learned that:

• Everything happens for a reason and God is always in control.
• Faith can move mountains.
• Ask and you shall receive.
• Faith is not seeing is to believe, we need to believe and God will do wonders.

Reflections and lessons learned from "Grandma" by Tan Seok Hoon

REFLECTIONS AND LESSONS LEARNED

I think this poem is all about a grandma’s memories, love, and ways of living her life though she’s old. We all have a grandma, and there are some grandchildren out there who are very close to their grandma, and I am one of those kids. It would feel uniquely different to be in our grandma’s arms. Seems to me like it’s the warmest arms in the world we could ever lean. Besides the sweetness that our grandma show, there will also be bad days ahead that Grandma will not be able to understand the things that are clicking or relevant to today’s generation. For me, it is not the world that will adjust, but it is Grandma that needs to understand and adjust because of the phrase that goes “constant change.” In the lines that goes “For a place in an old home. When senile Will is in the company of cronies. Each a tale to tell O the cruelty of their children. Who sends them to die.” She talked about it all the time when she’s sad or angry with us. Our grandma is one of the fallen angels here on earth, she makes everything better.

BRIEF SUMMARY

    A long time ago, a couple with one-rat daughter searches for the best husband for their only girl. They have known many rats, but none of them was good enough for their daughter. They asked Mr. Sun, Mr. Clouds, Mr. Wind, and Mr. Stone Buddha, but all of them refuses to marry their daughter. Then, Mr. Stone Buddha told them that “You and your cousins are very strong. Why if you burrow under my feet, I'll fall over and land on my head. I'm no match for you.” After a long journey of searching for the best partner for their daughter, the rat’s daughter ended marrying a rat as well.

 

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    Parents want the best for their children. They also have their pride that they want to have the best husband for their daughter. This story also depicts the culture of Korean people where parents arranged their child’s marriage. In my perspective, the parent’s expectation was too high that it was not even possible for a rat to marry a sun, wind, clouds, and a stone. The rat parents underestimated their own kind for not being enough to their daughter. However, fate will humble down a man of pride, letting them realize that they should not belittle their own kinds.

    Another thing is arranged marriage, for me, it is against a woman’s freedom of choosing who to love. Wealth and power should not be the main basis of choosing whom to marry, but attitude and hard work matter. The parents should allow their daughter to date whomever she wants because love is a covenant of two people who swear to commit to one another. Moreover, these are the lessons I have learned from the story:

• One should have a sense of responsibility in deciding on their own.

• Status in life is not the basis for marrying someone.

• Parents should be a supporter rather than being a dictator.

• Vanity should not be practiced since it is a ridiculous amount of pride.

Reflection and lessons learned from "Tao-te-Ching"

 TAO-TE-CHING

    Tao-te-Ching is one of the classic Chinese philosophical literature wherein it teaches ways to bring back harmony and calmness in living. Based on the e-book I have read, Tao-te-Ching is ancient wisdom for modern times. In my own perspective, Tao-te-Ching is like a bible in which whoever reads it will obtain wisdom and inner peace. I believe that despite our differences in religious and philosophical affiliations, we are all seeking for one goal and that is to promote healthy practice in life, understand how things in this world interact, peace, and everything that is pleasing.
Actually, there are too many passages present in this book. Here are the things I have learned from the passages I have read in Tao-te-Ching:

• Take time to re-evaluate how you live your life.

• Ask yourself why do you desire such things.

• Those who are not proud are appreciated.

• You can create heaven for yourself where you feel happy on your own.

• Embrace yourself at all times.

 THE MAD MAN ON THE ROOF

BRIEF SUMMARY

    Gisuke, a parent, was worried about his 24-year-old son, Yoshitaro, who climbs on the roof to watch the sunset. Gisuke attempted to persuade his son to climb down from the roof one day. But no matter how hard Gisuke tries, his son will not come down. As a result, he directed Kichiji, their servant, to get Yoshitaro onto the roof. Kichiji stepped outside to retrieve a ladder. Tosaku, their neighbor, entered the house and noticed what was going on. And realized it was Yoshitaro on the roof again. Then Tosaku suggested a Holy woman who could heal Yoshitaro.

    When the Holy Woman arrived at the residence, she stated that an evil spirit had possessed Yoshitaro. Suejiro entered and saved his brother Yoshitaro as they were doing Yoshitaro's mending treatment. Suejiro defended and explained his brother's situation to their parents. Informing them, that Yoshitaro was not possessed by an evil spirit, but rather suffered from a serious illness. The truth about their oldest son, Yoshitaro, is finally understood and accepted by their parents. In the end, brotherly love triumphed, causing the family to heal and reconcile.

 

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    Our family is someone who understands us when we are facing difficulties in life. When our mental health is being affected, we can have trouble expressing our emotions. We have different strategies in how to cope with our worries and anxieties, just like Yoshitaro, his coping strategy is climbing on the roof, watching the sunset. However, our parents may misunderstand our gestures especially if they are not aware of our struggles. For such reason, it is necessary to share our sentiments with the people who are close to us so that we can garner a support system.

    Our parents are the most concerned people we can meet in our life; we need to consider that if we are hurting, they can feel us too. We must cooperate with them so that we cannot be a burden. But if we wanted to take a little space before telling them what is wrong, we still need to inform them that we need space. With this, they can understand the importance of personal space and wait for the right time for us to talk. Even me, I also have the attitude that I do not tell my parents directly what I am going through. However, if I am ready to let my worries out, I share my worries with them. Most importantly, when we have a problem, it is better to enjoy a time alone than to physically harm ourselves.

Overall, here are the lessons I have learned from the story:

• Do not let your family worry you a lot.
• Be thankful for the people who love you.
• Do not mind other’s businesses.
• Protect your mental health.
• Change your negative perception in life.

    The story "The Thief Who Became a Disciple" is about Shichiri Kojun, who was chanting sutras when a thief with a keen sword entered. Shichiri told the thief to give him all his money and the thief said he could take it but leave him some so he could pay his taxes. The thief stole half of the money and thanked Shichiri. When the thief was apprehended, Shichiri went to court and told the audience that the thief did not steal his money, but rather gave it to him as a gift. The thief was still imprisoned, but after completing his sentence, he became Shichiri's disciple.

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    Life has amazing ways of turning tables and changing a person. Just like how the thief became a disciple, Shichiri became an instrument in changing the thief’s life. Personally, I thought of Shichiri as our Omnipotent that sees our wickedness but still forgave us many times. His compassion and mercy towards us led us to realize that we are not defined by our trespasses and we always have the opportunity to turn away from our wickedness. In addition, it is never too late for a man to repent and build his life in goodness.

    Let us also consider that a man can commit mistakes because of his financial problems. However, we can correct those people who like stealing in the right way or in tough love. Lastly, instead of stealing, we can ask someone to lend us help and promise them that we will repay them.  Of course, let us work hard to earn money so that we can avoid stealing from others’ wealth.

Below are the lessons I have learned from the story:

• Do not abuse the kindness of someone.

• Work in order to earn.

• Do not steal what is not yours.

• Turn away from your wicked ways

• Forgiveness is an act of love.

• Be thankful for the chances.

• Mistakes are to be cured, not to be repeated.

   BRIEF SUMMARY

    This story was all about an ill-tempered man who was changed because of a little incident. He was riding on a rickshaw when an old woman entangled to their rickshaw and fell to the ground. He ordered the rickshaw man to go on without even considering the situation of the old woman. However, the rickshaw man helped the old woman and he was just left there watching them. Later on, the police came and asked the ill-tempered man to find another rickshaw. Instead of nagging, he pulled a handful of coppers and ask the police to get it to the man and the old woman. That particular situation engraved in his memory makes him think about himself. Such little incident enables the ill-tempered man to learn shame, urging him to reevaluate his life, and giving him courage and hope.

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    Based on the story, we can reflect that man’s perception can change as he encounters and experience situation that might enable him to reflect on his character. We can reflect that regardless of how heartless and rude a person can be, there is still kindness within them. In life, there are times that we tend to be rude to other people because of our self-centeredness; however, the moment we witness people who show kindness to others will make us think of re-evaluating our own attitude and behavior. Human as we are, we are not perfect and we are all selfish in our own ways, but let us start practicing the act of humbling down ourselves and helping others who need a hand.

Moreover, deep inside the man felt ashamed of his coldness. He was so heartless that he did not bother to care for the old woman. Nevertheless, as soon he realizes that he was so rude, he felt ashamed. We can ponder upon this situation that, “what is wealth when he cannot buy kindness?” In addition, every person has this pure heart and goodness; it just takes a little encouragement and practice to unleash it. Whether we like it or not, it is our duty to share kindness with everyone. And if every person will have the heart to help and perform such a duty, we can have a harmonious society to live in.

BRIEF SUMMARY

    In the poem, a Han Dynasty emperor falls in love with a beautiful young girl who has never had an experience in the outside world. The emperor chooses her as a concubine and is so enamored with her that he forgets about his obligations. The two lovers spend every moment they can together until war breaks out and the emperor is called upon to lead his forces into battle. He can't bear the thought of leaving her alone, so he drags her along with him to the battle. The men see that the emperor is preoccupied, and they know that unless he comes to his senses, they will be defeated and murdered. They demand the lady's death, and the emperor has no choice but to comply.

    The emperor regains his focus after her death and leads his troops to victory. He returns to his palace, where he remembers and misses all of his good days with his girlfriend. The emperor has a Taoist priest contact the world of the dead so that he might talk to his lover once again. She, on the other hand, has progressed and is no longer concerned with earthly desires. The lady's soul requests that the messenger deliver these gifts to his emperor and inform him that she still loves him. She also sends him a message that if they belong together, they can meet again someday soon. Lastly, the poem ends with a line that goes, "Earth fades, Heaven fades, at the end of days. But Everlasting Sorrow endures always."

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    The story was tragic to the lover since it was about sacrificing love. Here, we can reflect that true love is all about giving what is best for your loved ones. There are moments that you need to let them go if that is the only solution to solve an issue. Practicing the art of letting go is not easy, it will test a person’s way of weighing priorities for the general welfare.

    In love, sacrificing is always apparent. We need to learn when to put our armor down or when to give way. This does not mean that we do not love them; however, this means that we are sacrificing because we love them that much. For the Emperor’s situation, his people need him and many of them depend on him. It was hard on his part, but he agreed to let things go that way. He lost his lover because of his kindness and love for his people. Maybe he thought that it is better to lose one than to lose many. Despite the fact that he gave away the life of his lover, he never misses a day to think of her. He was so desperate to be united with her and luckily, his lover understood why such a decision happened. Therefore, we can reflect that genuine love encompasses all fears and sacrifices because at the end of the day, what is meant for you will always go back to you.

Here are the lessons we can grasp in the story:

• Loving can hurt us sometimes.

• Sacrificing for the general welfare is not bad.

• What is meant for you will always be with you.

• Death cannot separate two hearts who beat as one.

• Know your priorities.

• Balance your time and responsibilities.

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    This poem, it represents the feeling of how a person feels when he misses home. A quiet place tends to let us overthink things that accidentally pass through our minds. The thoughts we usually think come from what we feel inside. It is not us being dramatic, but it is just a freedom of expression and reaction to the things we realized when we are all alone.

Just like what the writer of this poem experienced, I also had the opportunity to live alone far from my family. At first, I did not feel the longingness to be at home. I feel happy to be free at last from the chain of depending on them. However, the happiness did not last for a day passes by, is a day that I am becoming empty inside. Therefore, we cannot totally forget the things that feel like home. At the end of the day, we keep on craving for the scent, warmth, and comfort of being at home.

In this poem, I have learned the following:

• A home is not a house, it is a feeling.

• A man cannot survive alone, we all need a home to lean on.

• Happiness is temporary if we have no one to share a good laugh with.

• Our strength and will to go on comes from our family.

• The belongingness we feel in our family is genuine and pure.

 THE SPIDER'S THREAD

BRIEF SUMMARY

    Akutagawa's most well-known short story is The Spider's Thread. It's a gorgeous allegory about good, evil, and redemption. Kandata, the evil criminal sentenced to Hell for his transgressions, is given a second chance to save himself, thanks to the Buddha recalling that he had saved the life of a small spider. But when Kandata tries to save himself at the price of others, his fate is determined for all time.

 

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    Our life here on Earth is passing, so it is better if we will practice doing what is good than being evil in all things. My reflection upon the story is that the Omnipotent gives redemption to those who worked so hard for it. For Kandata, who was known to be a great robber who has done so many evil things, Buddha recalls and pardoned him because he saved the life of a spider; nevertheless, Kandata’s heart is still not pure and was not sorry for all he has done. We can still see Kandata’s selfishness, as he has been greedy for not sharing the thread with his fellow sinners.

    For me, it was really too late that Kandata was pardoned and it is not a valid reason that in just saving a spider, he can have redemption. A sinner who is truly sorry for his sin prays and changes his attitude even before he died to be redeemed. Unlucky Kandata, he deserves what he received. Therefore, in this story, it challenges us to turn away from our sins and pray for salvation because salvation is not given in an instant. It is true that the Omnipotent sees who deserves salvation, but we need to remember also that not everyone deserves to have it.

The lessons I have learned from this story is that:

• Salvation comes to those who prayed and asked for it.

• Do good while you are still alive.

• Do not be greedy because we do not know what lies ahead.

• Humble yourself.

• Stealing is one of the greatest mortal sins.

 THE PICTURE WIFE

BRIEF SUMMARY

    There lived a simple man named Gombei who work in the field. One day, a woman shows up at his door begging for water and a place to spend the night, Both of them are not yet married, so when the beautiful woman gained her strength, they both agreed that they should marry. Gombei was so in love with his wife that he can’t finish his entire work for the day because he would love to stare at his wife. Gombei’s wife decided that Gombei should have a portrait of her in the field so that Gombei can work and at the same time staring at the portrait. Unfortunately, a wind blew on the portrait and went into the wall of the lord’s garden. The Lord ordered them to look for Gombei’s wife until they found her. Gombei and his wife had a plan, they tricked the lord making the lord wander in the streets and Gombei was already wearing the robes of the King. Both had a good laugh and they live there happily together.

 

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    We can reflect upon the story that a good wife is cannot be stolen from her husband. Gombei’s wife is wise in planning how to trick the lord who thought that he could easily swing her emotions. In relevance to our society today, many of us thought that a woman would always choose a wealthy man over a good man. This concept is not totally correct because not all women have the same standards in picking a man to share their lives with and Gombei’s beautiful wife represents those wives who are loyal to their spouses. On the other hand, the lord represents those men who only go after a woman’s beauty without knowing them thoroughly.

    Indeed, a strong marriage is composed of faithfulness, trust, and love to the extent that no matter how many obstacles may happen, the couple will still choose each other all over again. And as a woman, I was able to reflect that a good wife must not harm the pride and emotion of her husband. Through this, marriage life will grow and endure forever.

Here are the lessons I have grasped in the story:

• Love encompasses all challenges.

• Love is forever faithful.

• A man must cooperate with his wife.

• Both husband and wife should work together.

Reflection and lessons learned from "My Native Village"

 MY NATIVE VILLAGE

    This poem narrates how the author feels toward his native village. So what is really the concept of home? Is it the same as the author’s perception of what his native village was all about?

    Based on my own point of view, home is where you left your heart at. It is a place and a feeling that you always wanted to stay. It is where we learn our first word, first walk, and first play. In relation to the author’s poem, I can say that my perception of home and his definition of his native village consist of the same characteristics. Wherever we may go, we cannot deny the fact that engraved inside our hearts is a missing jigsaw puzzle, and that is the longing of our home. As I have stated earlier, home can be a feeling as well. Home as a feeling is the touch of emotion that caresses our soul. This feeling can be felt in the arms of our special someone, a friend, and a family. Therefore, a home is a place and a feeling that we always long for.

Here are the lessons I have learned from the poem:

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    According to an analysis that I have read, this poem is all about the difficulty of going to Shu or a metaphor for the challenge of achieving what a person wants. If we will relate the poem to being an immigrant of a particular place, we can tell that it is hard to fit in a new community where people and places are not familiar to us. We will experience oppression, exclusion, bullying, and any other forms of discrimination. Nevertheless, we can still adjust to it in the long run.

    On the other hand, if we will connect the thought of the poem towards life, it is like describing the struggle towards the road of success. We perceive things differently, and as for me, I see this poem as a reminder that the road towards our goals will never be easy. It will be a roller coaster ride where ups and downs will be encountered. Aside from that, there may be times that the path going there becomes darker because we cannot deny the fact that sometimes, we are afraid of taking risks. For this reason, we started to doubt ourselves which makes it harder for us to go on.

In addition, the poem mentioned venomous reptiles in the night that are ready to cut people represents those toxic people who give us negative thoughts about our journey. It is always a thrill to wander and meet different people, however, it is also challenging for we do not know who will genuinely support us or who is faking their support in us. Therefore, there is no shortcut and smooth road going to success.

To wrap it up, here are the lessons I have learned from the poem:

• No road is smooth going to success.

• Life is a roller coaster ride; it will blow your mind.

• It is hard to fit in a place that is new.

• Travelling from places can be physically, emotionally, and mentally challenging.

• Do not be afraid in taking risks.

REFLECTION AND LESSON LEARNED FROM THE POEM

    My interpretation of this poem is that of a man who wakes up from a hangover realizing how helpless he was. In relation to that, to be under the power of alcohol is to feel tired and expressive of unsaid thoughts. It is hard to deal with emotions when a person is already carried away by feelings. Moreover, right after being so drunk, you woke up the next morning forgetting or sometimes regretting what you have done. Regrets of the drunk behavior you have committed and utter bothers you badly. Then, just like a spring day where summer has gone and plants started to grow, your hangover shall pass leaving you with the realization that too much alcohol can drive you insanely loud and mad that you do not want to try it again. However, it is impossible for a man to resist the idea of getting drunk when he is used to it.

    Personally, I tried to be under the control of alcohol wherein I woke up the next day regretting a lot of things I have done and said. It was the worst, but it taught me a lesson that I should control myself If ever I will taste alcohol again. Waking up and not remembering things last night makes me feel foolish. Though I got embarrassed, I learned that it is never too late for me to grow again. My experience about waking up from drunkenness made me a better person with a new perspective about moderation and control.

Overall, here are the lessons I have learned from the poem:

• Too much alcohol intake drives a man insane.

• Moderation is necessary.

• Mistakes are temporary; it is never too late to grow.

• Alcohol can make a person feel helpless.

Reflection and lessons learned from "The Analects of Confucius"

 THE ANALECTS OF CONFUCIUS

    The Analects of Confucius is a collection of small passages that present Confucius' and his followers' remarks, define Confucius as a man, and record some of his life events. It is divided into twenty books, each of which contains a series of chapters containing quotes from Confucius that were assembled by his disciples after his death. Given below is one of the passages written in the analects:

“Respect yourself and others will respect you.” – Confucius

 

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    The word “respect” is a huge feeling of admiration for someone, and everyone wants to gain respect from the people around us despite differences. As the passage says, “Respect yourself and others will respect you” it implies that in order to gain respect, we must learn how to respect our own selves too. Self-respect is our pride, honor, and dignity. Showing other people how we value ourselves will embark in their minds that they are facing a person with principles in life.

    The main topic of these analects is morality. There are many passages written in the Analects of Confucius, and these passages help a person to realize the truth and way of life. Indeed, the teachings of Confucius encourage a man to do good things that benefit not only oneself but also the people around him. Moreover, these teachings play a significant role in improving behavior, character, and way of living. Without these passages, a man will not be able to ponder on their actions.

    Personally, I am not a follower of Confucius however; I find his teachings interestingly complicated sometimes and comprehensible. His teachings will surely make individuals evaluate the life they are living. Through it, we can slowly change our wicked ways and slowly practice what matters. Below are the lessons I have learned:

• Respect is granted, not earned.

• Follow the teachings of the wise.

• Turn back from your wicked ways.

• Do not allow yourself to be disrespected.

• Shape your character for it matters.

• Follow the pursuit of morality.

Brief summary, reflection and lessons learned from "Simon who was called Peter"

 SIMON WHO WAS CALLED PETER

BRIEF SUMMARY

    Jesus appeared to Simon and his brother Andrew as they were fishing in the Sea of Galilee. He promised to take them to the inlet where the fish were swimming. Andrew stated that they are familiar with all of the inlets along those coasts. Jesus responded by telling them that He would make them fishers of men and that their nets would never be empty. The brothers abandoned their boats in order to follow Jesus. While they were strolling, Andrew invited Jesus to their home that night for a cheap lunch, to which Jesus agreed. When Simon's wife and mother arrived, they worshiped Jesus and proceeded to prepare supper. Andrew's daughter clutched Jesus' robe like a lost sheep who had met its shepherd.

    As they ate, Jesus spoke of the second birth of man and the opening of the heavens, as well as the angels rising to the throne delivering men's longings to the Lord God. Then Jesus looked at the two brothers and invited them to rest with Him. The two brothers freely chose to follow Jesus and let Him weave them in His hands like a fabric. Petronelah, Simon's daughter, sat at Jesus' feet. Simon's wife and mother just sobbed silently and joyfully. Jesus looked at the old moon for a moment before telling the women to go find their beds and that he was pleased to have thrown his net that day and caught two men

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    Jesus has a unique way of connecting with us. In the bible, Peter was known to be a disciple who denied God three times, but despite that betrayal, He still reconnects with Peter. In addition, this story shows how He connects with Simon and Andrew wherein He wants us to have a relationship with Him. When Jesus calls, we need to answer immediately. He calls us by our name with promises of making us blessed. God’s calling is an invitation to make our lives better under His presence. To be His follower is a commitment and a covenant that you made with Him, but it takes time and sacrifices to build a strong relationship. And as we build our relationship with Him, we must remember to strengthen our faith. Our faith in Him can make miracles in our lives.
    In addition, God is a loving God that plays no favoritism. Whatever our status in life, He comes close to those who need help and is pure of heart. God sees potential in us and he makes wonders to those who believe. However, to be a believer alone does not mean that God is pleased with you already because God wants to bless those who are believers, and at the same time, He blessed those who are diligent in their work. Moreover, Simon and Andrew’s family is an example of a God-centered family. They praise and worship them together that pleases the Lord.
    In my life, I have so much to thank. Despite my poor attitude, He never discouraged me to keep on improving. Knowing that God knows what we want before we ask, proves how selfless and kind He is. Here are the lessons we can get from the story:

• When God calls, answer immediately.

• Trust the Lord with all of your heart.

• A man must live by faith and not by sight.

• Following Him means never turning back from the past.

• A family that prays together pleases the Lord.

• God wants to have a relationship with us, therefore allow Him to enter.

THE LADY AND

HER FIVE SUITORS

 

BRIEF SUMMARY

    The wife of a merchant is having an affair. When her lover was arrested after a quarrel, she dresses in her best gorgeous clothes and rushes to have him released, claiming that he is her brother. She is required to petition the magistrate (Wali) for his release and arrange for the lovestruck Wali to pay her a visit that night. She goes through the same motions with the Kazi (Qadi), Vizier, and King. Finally, she commissions a carpenter to build a cabinet with five separate locking compartments, dyes four different costumes, and cooks a feast.

    The Kazi is the first to come, and she has him put on a gown. When they hear a knock on the door, she tells them it's her husband and hides the Kazi in one of the compartments. It is the Wali who has written a letter of forgiveness for her "brother." She instructs him to put on the second gown. Then there's another knock, and she says it's her husband, who she places in the second compartment. This also occurs with the Vizier and the King. When the carpenter arrives, she informs him that there is an issue with the upper compartment. He steps into it to ensure it's safe, and she promptly closes it, free her beloved, and departs the city with him. The five guys are confined in the cabinet for three days until their neighbors hear their voices and let them out, revealing them all in the clothes given to them by the woman.

 

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    The merchant’s wife in the story fooled the five lustful men. Her action proves that a man’s weakness can be a woman. In her hands, she bravely played among the five just to solve her problem, which is to pardon his husband who was imprisoned. Indeed, a woman can do great things for love. In addition, it is also evident that a woman’s beauty can be deceiving, that beauty is passing but wit and knowledge encompass beauty.

    A good wife does not present purity and beauty alone, but with knowledge, that will also serve as the husband’s pride. Begging for a favor is not an easy thing to do however if she knows how to handle her problem with ease with the use of her poise and elegance, she can maximize it. In the story, the wife gained favor, as she became a great seducer of men. This just proves that no matter how smart and well-establish a man is, if he is driven by lust and blinded by looks, he will surely take his fall.

    To be fair about how sexual desires and love work, we cannot exclude the fact that both of the opposite sexes are driven by love and desire. In which men’s weakness is women and so is women’s weakness is men. This claims the fact that both sexes are emotionally assertive in terms of providing what is best for their partners.

 

Overall, here are the following lessons I have learned:

• Love plays the foolish game. A person can use trickery in order to pursue what you want to have.
• Beauty is deceiving. A man who only searches for beauty can be deceived into how that particular woman will drive him insane.
• Wit can solve problems. Good intelligence and strategy bring solutions so, one must think critically.

Brief summary, reflection, and lessons learned from "Aladdin and the Magic Lamp"

 

 ALADDIN AND THE MAGIC LAMP

BRIEF SUMMARY

    One day, there was a young boy named Alladin who was trapped in a cave alone. Fortunately, Aladdin still has the sorcerer's magic ring. When he rubs his hands in despair, he accidentally rubs the ring, causing a genie to appear and carry him home to his mother. When Aladdin's mother tries to clean the lamp, a second, considerably more powerful genie appears, obligated to execute the bidding of the person holding the lamp. Aladdin becomes rich and powerful with the help of the genie of the lamp and marries Princess Badroulbadour, the Sultan's daughter. The genie creates a magnificent palace for Aladdin, considerably more magnificent than the Sultan's own.

    The sorcerer reappears and obtains the lamp by duping Aladdin's wife, who is unaware of the lamp's significance, into exchanging "new lamps for old." He instructs the lamp's genie to transport the palace to his home in the Maghreb. Fortunately, Aladdin has kept the magical ring and can summon the lesser genie. Although the genie of the ring cannot directly undo the genie of the lamp's spell, he is able to take Aladdin to Maghreb and assist him in recovering his wife and the lamp as well as defeating the sorcerer.

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    The sorcerer represents people who used others just for their own desires. These kinds of people use trickery and foolishness as they deceive those who are powerless. Alladin represents a rag to riches story wherein he was favored and blessed by his fate. Here, we can reflect that life has an ironic way of surprising us. Sometimes, we tend to question our status in life. However, miracles happen when we deserve to achieve such aspirations.

          Apart from that, we can ponder upon how society, craves wealth than being kind. It is true that avaricious kinds of people exist, which they grasp for money by doing malicious and treachery in nature. Nevertheless, these characters would not prosper for a long period of time since the time will come that they will be humbled down. On the other hand, Aladdin was just so lucky that he got the Genie. Our fate depends on our deeds, if we are humble and pure at heart, there will be a twist of fate. His strength and humble heart was blessed that he even used his wishes for goodness.

          Despite the goodness we see in the story, it was not stated that Aladdin tells the truth to his wife about where he came from. Therefore, I can say that Aladdin is lying and not telling the truth about how he gets his wealth to his wife and it is not right to have secrets from your spouse. Another thing is the characteristic of Aladdin’s wife, she is easily tricked because she is clumsy in letting a stranger get into her house and bargain things. Her gullible attitude almost killed Alladin, she should have done anything better like being strict in welcoming strangers to their abode.

Overall, here are the lessons I have grasped in the story:

• An identity is built up with a character and not wealth.
• Be cautious in facing strangers.
• Wealth is the root of evil.
• A good wife must know how to protect her home.
• Stealing will do you no good.
• Foolishness has no medicine.

Brief summary, reflection, and lessons learned from "The Food of Paradise"

 

 THE FOOD OF PARADISE

BRIEF SUMMARY

    The pious Mullah Ibrahim taught himself not only to leave his life in the hands of fate but also to discover the method and reason for the provision of goods for man. He exited the seminary and walked out of Baghdad, where he had lived for many years. He was only waiting for the blessings of Allah and had not been eating for days. One day, he saw a floating food on the river to which he reached and opened. It became his supply for a few days ‘til he decided to look where the food originated and he discovered that it was from a princess who threw food in the river. Ibrahim then realizes that Allah surely gives food to everyone, but its quality and kindness are dictated by what man deserves.

REFLECTION AND LESSONS LEARNED

    Sometimes, a man’s perception changes because of untoward circumstances that disappoint him in life. Just like Ibrahim, he turned his back from his noble job, which is teaching because the school was not paying him well. For this reason, he thought that if Allah really provides, he would survive the life of being jobless. In relation to the society we are living in, we can see many beggars begging for money and food. We can tell that their mindset is the reason why they remain poor. The reasons can be laziness, disappointments, and an unmotivated mindset. If a person wants to succeed in life, he will go against the odds until he reaches what he aims for. However, if a person’s mindset is merely about planning without doing, it means he is stagnant and will not be able to achieve his goals.

    Nonetheless, a man can still change his lifestyle if he will realize the consequences of his actions. In my life, I also have to change things and attitudes so that I can achieve my aspirations. However, there are really instances that I question why things are not going my way. But like Ibrahim, I realized that questioning the Omnipotent for the misfortunes I had is not helping me. A man should understand that life is not all about chasing rainbows; it is sometimes stormy weather.

     Indeed, Allah provides everyone’s needs, but a man receives what he deserves. If we will work hard, we earn good, but if we do not work, we earn less. A man’s fortune is based on the efforts he exerted. We should not depend on luck, because chances of gaining luck are rare.

Altogether, here are the lessons we can obtain:

• We should be thankful for every blessing we receive.
• In life, we must do the best and the Omnipotent will do the rest.
• Never question the Omnipotent for he has plans for you.
• A man gets what he deserves.
